Charity

At the Evening Star, we are serious about charity.
In the last ten years we have given over £120,000 to good causes.

We give at least £2500, four times each year
Every time we meet we give away at least £2500 from the Lodge Benevolent Fund, which was founded nearly 100 years ago.
Charities are proposed and voted for by all of our members; no charity is too big or too small, no cause too mainstream or too niche.
Often our individual members choose to support our charitable efforts, but this is done very much according to individual means and inclination. That being said, wanting to support charities, through volunteering time as well as donating money, is an important part of what being a mason is all about.
Members are supported too; should they or their family fall on hard times, we are there to help. Our Lodge Almoner is responsible for this part of what we do; members have the option to subscribe to the 'Almoner's Chest', which exists so that we can help members and their families, should they ever fall on hard times.
Who we help
In the last couple of years, with each donation being for at least £500, these are just some of the charities our members have elected to support:

The Lodge holds a collection of historic 'Festival Jewels'. These are honours conferred on past members in recognition of personal charitable giving.
