The Cigarette Case

Founded in 1877, we have operated continually ever since.

Originally intended to provide a home for those working in the oil and gas industry (hence our motto, 'ex tenebris lux'), over the years our membership has moved away from that association.

Once renowned for its large and extensive banqueting, since its foundation the Evening Star Lodge has played host to a number of distinguished members and guests.

Perhaps the most interesting way to explore that history is through a few select highlights of the material heritage that survives.

Our Lodge's silver cigarette case and loving cup (the latter now on display in the Museum of Freemasonry), for use at Lodge Banquets, were donated to the Lodge by a Founding Past Master, Brother Sir John Aird, Bart. The Cigarette case is still used today.

Three resplendent ivory gavels, originally for the use of the Masters at Banquets, can now be seen on display during our meetings. Our Master's gavel itself was used by H.R.H The Prince of Wales when he attended an Evening Star banquet in 1933.

Our Worshipful Master's collar was presented to the Lodge by Brother Lt. Colonel W. R. Glover, C.M.G., D.S.O., in memory of his brother, the late Brother Captain R. Glover, who was killed in action during WW1. Brother David Glover is still a member today.

Past Masters of the Evening Star still wear our unique Past Masters Jewel. Being elected as Master of our Lodge is the highest honour we have in our power to confer, and whilst each Master is only in office for a year it is a considerable commitment to undertake. When leaving office, each Master receives a jewel to be worn by them at all Masonic meetings, as an enduring sign of both the esteem they are held in and their indelible connection to the Evening Star.

Past Masters wear their jewel with pride until they receive London Grand Rank, at which point it is returned to the Lodge - each one bears the names of all those to have previously worn it through the Lodge's long history.

It is also an Evening Star custom for each year's Master to be furnished with a Lodge Tankard, as an expression of their gratitude for the efforts he has made (and the forbearance he has shown) over the course of the team's year.
